How to read earthquake reports

What is the difference between magnitude and intensity?

Magnitude measures the size of an earthquake at its source. Intensity describes the shaking observed or felt at a specific location. The same earthquake can produce different intensities in different places.

What does earthquake depth tell us?

Depth is the distance from the surface to the point where the rupture began. Shallow events can cause stronger shaking near the epicenter. Distance, local geology and construction also affect what people experience.

How can I check for a tsunami warning?

Check the warning center responsible for the affected region. Magnitude and a catalog flag alone do not establish whether a warning is in effect. The event record points to available products and official sources.

Where can I find earthquakes in Brazil?

The University of São Paulo’s Seismology Center is part of Brazil’s national seismic network. Its catalog can include smaller local events that are absent from the global USGS feed.

Data sources and updates

The map uses the USGS past-week catalog and checks it once a minute while the tab is active. The list below the globe reflects the data available when the page opened. The USGS may revise magnitude, location and depth after an event is first reported.
